How to Make the Perfect Matcha at Home

Why Matcha Deserves a Place in Your Kitchen

Matcha has gone from a niche Japanese tea ceremony staple to a global phenomenon and for good reason. Rich in antioxidants, naturally energising without the coffee jitters, and strikingly beautiful in its vivid green form, matcha is the drink of the moment. But making it well at home requires the right technique and the right tools.

What You'll Need

Before you begin, gather your equipment:

  • Matcha powde: ceremonial grade for drinking, culinary grade for lattes and baking
  • Bamboo whisk (chasen): essential for a smooth, frothy bowl
  • Whisk stand:  keeps your chasen in shape between uses
  • Mixing bowl (chawan): wide enough to whisk freely
  • Matcha sieve:  sifts out lumps for a silky texture
  • Matcha spoon (chashaku): for precise measuring (1–2g per serving)
  • Hot water: 70–80°C, never boiling

Step-by-Step: Traditional Matcha

  1. Sift 1–2g of matcha powder through your sieve into the bowl to remove any clumps.
  2. Add water: pour about 60–70ml of water at 75°C over the powder.
  3. Whisk in a brisk W or M motion using your bamboo whisk until a fine foam forms on the surface. This takes about 20–30 seconds.
  4. Drink immediately: matcha settles quickly, so enjoy it fresh.

Step-by-Step: Matcha Latte

  1. Sift 2g of matcha into your bowl and mix with a small amount of hot water into a smooth paste.
  2. Steam or froth your milk of choice, oat milk works beautifully with matcha.
  3. Pour the milk over the matcha paste and stir gently.
  4. Add a squeeze of honey or agave if desired.

Tips for the Best Results

  • Always sift your matcha, it makes a noticeable difference in texture.
  • Use filtered water if possible for a cleaner flavour.
  • Store matcha in an airtight container away from light and heat.
  • Rinse your bamboo whisk with warm water after each use and store it on a whisk stand to maintain its shape.
